                                                              ALLIANOI BATH

Allianoi was discovered with our rescue excavations started in 1998 at Paşa Baths place, located in 18 km northeast of Bergama Town, Izmir Province.

Scientific excavations in the valley showed that Allianoi was spread over at least 40000 m² areas. And Allianoi baths is spreading over 9800 m².

The place of Paşa baths serviced from Hellenistic Period was understood that it was used as a second Health Center in the 2^nd century AC. A great number of water related buildings were discovered in Allianoi where hydrotherapy was applying to the patients. Besides the magnificent bath, two bridges with double belts, one independent fountain, two fountains which had different architectural structure, three rest rooms and one fish pool was discovered. Clean and disposal water systems coming to each of these constructions makes Allianoi an unmatched laboratory for Roman Period.

It is understood that health center and bath were build up for absolute necessities because of the hot water existence in its construction area. It is determined that the structure has three floors in the north, and it slopes to the south and decreases to one floor for profiting from day light and heat.  Using of hot water boiled from the ground, and it’s mixing with cold water, heating of water time to time, pools and the organization of the usage of places constitute important data about Roman baths independently

Ilya Stream passing through the middle of the Bath, divides the structure into two sections as north and south. And the connection is provided by double vaulted tunnel. This was done most probably by the design of architectures sent from Roman Empire in first quarters of second century BC. However, it is known that Allianoi bath coming from 1800 years ago, is the world’s best protected structure that still contains hot water inside.
