Allianoi's Current Situation

The Countries that erase their own past, can never maintain their existence in future

One of the the world’s best preserved and biggest Roman thermal spa have been found in Allianoi which is still filled with hot springs.Lots of important scientific conclusions were established to the literature of ; archaeology, art history, engineering, medicine, architecture, hydrology, and pharmacology.

Allianoi was designated as a heritage site of the first order from the İzmir’s I. KTVK Committee in 2001. In order to change the decision of the committee, lots of pressure was made upon them. The committee has made a persistance resistance to the decision as a first order site untill the October of 2007.

In order to save Allianoi, 35000 of signatures have been collected. During the years of 2005,2006 the most written applications which were send to Turkish Minister, were about the preservation of the Allianoi.

Domestic and İnternational;

There are a number of conferences, panel discussions, exhibitions, concerts and shows that have been organized for Allianoi. Over fifty of books and articles have been published about the site.

There have been a lot of court cases were instigated by the Civil Community Organizations .These organizations resorted to governmental officals in order to preserve Allianoi.

We have launched many court cases and AHIM court case is still ongoing.

In order to save Allanoi in a real sense, an alternative project was send to the Ministry of Turkey in 2002 and  was rejected by the Minister of Culture because of its exorbitant estimate.

In order to cover up the intention of submerging the site within the Academic sphere , The Minister of Turkey had established an I. Academic Science Committee in 2005. They stressed the fact that submerging the site will not protect the cultural heritage site, and further emphasized that Allianoi should be included in the World Heritage List. However Committee’s scientific report was concealed from the public.

II. Academic Scientific Committee  was established in 2006. Committee came up with six alternative proposals. They decided not to provide a report to submerging the site and this decision was also concealed from the public too.

In 2007, III. Academic Science Committee was decided to establish by the Minister of Turkey. The committee members were taken to the excavation area without negotiating with the scientific committee members. The report was prepared according to bureaucrats’ aims. The decision of submerging the site was declared by the Committeee after presentation of the report to the preservation committee within the same week. The game of the “ Scientific Committee” would have continued untill the decision of demolishing the site.

In March 2001,the Committee which declared that a heritage site of the first order should be preserved from the submerging , showed a dilemma by gaving a deceptive method in October 2007 that  filling the structures on the site with clay would preserve the site.

The Turkish government is ignoring the International Conventions that have been ratified before , and more over Turkey is  also implementing its own Constitutional law by submerging the site.

One of the most important Humankinds’ common cultural heritage site is going into the darkness of the history without gaining any knowledge about it.

Excavating after the afterlife of the dam construction is the biggest lie of all and no people from Academics can make a claim about this.

There is no a cultural heritage site in the world that has been brought back to the history of humankind after descending below the dam’s irrigation flood.

Whenever Turkey will decide to safeguard Allianoi for the future generations then, She will demonstrate herself as a contemporary state which is relevant to the  21. century.

Do not let your future to be buried into the sand, Do not let Allianoi to be buried into mud!
